A fabulous story about cacao trees, elephants, and bees

The Udzungwa Mountain National Park is a natural wonderland. Elephants roam playfully in the woods and farming families have planted an ultra-rare cacao for generations. Only when elephants trample fields and steal crops conflict breaks open. But what can farmers do? African elephants grow as tall as basketball goals and weigh more than three minivans. These beloved behemoths are famously social, intelligent, emotional — and hungry.

Conservationists found a genius answer: intimidate them with an insect the size of a paper clip. Elephants are terrified of bees. And for good reason: When they disturb a beehive, they often walk away with stings in their sensitive trunks and ears. Setting up beehives in a fence line keeps elephants on safe distance. Now Udzungwa farmers can feel playful again themselves in the security of honey producing fences and cacao producing trees.

Know Your Bean: Udzungwa Trinitario

Among classic Trinitario cacao from the Udzungwa region, scientists have also identified cacao trees that are a hybrid between Ecuadorian Nacional and Trinitario from Venezuela. There are few origins worldwide where this cacao has been found to date.

One bar : One tree @Udzungwa

Since 2012, two exceptional entrepreneurs, Brian LoBue and Simran Bindra, have grown the local cacao company Kokoa Kamili and helped more than 2500 local farmers prosper by purchasing wet cocoa at a premium price and planting thousands of new trees.

Among their growers is even a convent, the Mbingu Sisters. The income the Sisters earn from their farm goes to support much of their charitable work – including operating a hospital, school and orphanage in the area. Original Beans supports Udzungwa cacao farmers and conservation

  • by subsidizing thousands of trees in the local nurseries
  • by partnering with the Southern Tanzania Elephant Programme (STEP) and help fund hundreds of beehives for fences
