The most threatened and least known rainforest on earth

The Esmeraldas Province lies at the southernmost point of one of the most threatened and least known rainforest ecosystems on earth – the Chocó. We source our Esmeraldas cacao from Mache Chindul, the last coastal cloud forest of Ecuador which replenishes all major rivers in the region and is home to an enormous variety of plants and wildlife, including the spectacular Imbabura Tree Frog and the Mache Glas Frog.

Already, 85 small rural communities have settled inside the nature reserve and add to the deforestation, caused by logging and slash and burn practices. However, the remoteness of Mono Bravo guarantees that their heirloom Arriba Nacional cacao remains unaffected by Ecuador’s boom in hybrid cocoa. Which gives them – and us and you – the gift for exceptional heirloom chocolate. And the chance to preserve the other gifts of nature in Mache Chindul.

Know your bean: Mono Bravo Arriba

The name of the Arriba Nacional cacao is said to originate from “de rio arriba”, meaning upriver. That precisely is how things go down in Mono Bravo nowadays: old and young cowboys of the village elegantly travel over streams and creeks on horseback to bring their exceptional beans to us.

In several village communities, we help to preserve and reforest local Arriba Nacional cacao varieties and provide training in organic cacao growing, fermentation, drying and quality control. In return to our investments, the community of Mono Bravo has already committed 800 hectares of highly biodiverse rainforest as a village forest reserve and as customer of the Dutch energy company Van De Bron you can acquire their climate certificates.

Here is more of what we do:

  • Preserve and reforest local Arriba Nacional cacao varietals
  • Protect 200 hectares of highly biodiverse rainforest
  • Help farmers get organic certified
  • Train in cacao-agroforestry and post-harvest management
  • Subsidize proper farming equipment and tools
