Overcoming centuries of oppression, the indigenous Zoque and Tzotzil tribes with whom we make this select tribal chocolate have stayed true to their spirited traditions in the Selva Zoque, Mexico’s largest rainforest. A favourite food of the Selva’s spider monkeys, cacao was cultivated by the ancient Zoque 4000 years ago. They gave it its name, “kakaw”, and its god: a spider monkey.
