Zero Child Labour Statement

May 01, 2022

It almost feels unthinkable for Original Beans to have to write a post like this. And yet, clarity and accountability matter. At Original Beans, regenerative cacao begins with respect for people. Every child deserves the freedom to learn, to play, and to grow. Protecting children is therefore not separate from our mission, it is foundational to healthy forests, resilient farms, and thriving communities. We are committed to zero child labour across all our value chains.

What we mean by child labour
Child labour is any work carried out by persons under 18 that:
  • interferes with schooling.
  • harms physical or mental development.
  • deprives children of their childhood, dignity, or future.

Our definition follows the standards of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

How we safeguard children
Our Zero Child Labour Policy is embedded in the Original Beans Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS) and anchored in Principle 3 (Social Empowerment) of the Original Beans Craft Cacao Standard.

Across all origins:
  • Every farmer household is visited annually through Organic, Fairtrade, and Fair for Life audits.
  • Risks are actively monitored through structured interviews and field observations.
  • Any identified case triggers immediate action, led by trusted local partners and aligned with certification requirements.

If a case is detected by our field teams, it is formally reported to local partners to ensure appropriate remediation and long-term support for the child and their family. In 2025, our field teams and trusted partners in origin identified no cases of child labour across our value chains.

Beyond Compliance
Ending child labour is not achieved through audits alone. It requires stable farmer incomes, access to education, and strong local institutions.

Through long-term partnerships, premium pricing, and continuous investment at origin, we work to address the root causes of child labour while strengthening the resilience of cacao landscapes and the communities that protect them.

Because truly regenerative cacao leaves no child behind.
